Why is this medication prescribed?

Protriptyline belongs to a class of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants, and is indicated mainly for the treatment of depression.

This medication may also be prescribed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), narcolepsy, and along with other tricyclic antidepressants to reduce the incidence of recurring headaches such as migraines.

While protriptyline was not developed specifically to treat these conditions, clinical studies have shown additional uses for this drug.
